Physical Education
'I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times Ive been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed and failed and failed over again in my life and that is why I succeed'
- Michael Jordan
Overview of PE in our school
At Moor Park, we believe that Physical Education is an opportunity to create positive experiences and view the subject as an opportunity to develop the whole child. Physical Education is a tool to promote lifelong engagement in an active and healthy life.
By using a bespoke Physical Education programme, we are able to ensure our pupils receive high quality lessons that are designed to meet their educational and emotional needs. These lessons are designed to be fun, inclusive, age and stage appropriate to create positive early experiences and judgements within PE, Physical Activity, School Sport and the wider community Sport opportunities available. This is crucial for children to sustain interest and participate in a healthy active lifestyle.
Vision
Our vision for PE is that it is used as a vital educational tool to teach transferrable skills that pupils will need to be successful throughout their life.
How we go about achieving this:
Through a PE curriculum that develops the whole child
Through a values-based education approach within PE.
Through PE lessons that allow for maximum physical activity to take place
We promote a healthy active lifestyle, which will equip them for life long participation in physical activity.
We deliver an inclusive broad and balanced curriculum which enthuses, inspires and embeds Moor Park’s key values and key transferrable skills, so the children can fulfil their potential and become the best they can be.
Aims
Through our PE curriculum, and the wider Physical activity and School Sport offers, we aim to:
-
Develop skills in the following areas: physical, cognitive, social and emotional
-Physical skills such as throwing and catching
-Cognitive skills such as problem solving

-
Develop the individual talents of our pupils
-
Provide high quality opportunities which promotes Sportspersonship and embeds Moor Park’s key values.

Ensure that all pupils engage in physical activity for sustained periods
-
Ensure that all pupils understand the importance of an active healthy lifestyle.
-
Improve health and well-being for life long participation
When our pupils leave our school, from a PE perspective, we want them to:
They will leave Moor Park, displaying our school values in PE, physical activity, School Sport and the wider aspects of school life, and be able to apply these in all areas of life.
Values expected to be shown:
-
Friendship – in PE, this is shown by working as a team. Children know that every child has something to offer and is encouraged in their contributions.
-
Respect- in PE, this is shown by valuing each other, being tolerant and accepts decisions made by peers and adults.
-
Responsibility – in PE, this is shown by taking ownership of their actions and show reason and competence when faced with challenges- individually and as a team.
-
Perseverance- in PE, this is shown by a positive attitude and an ‘I can’ approach to aspects of the curriculum which are challenging to the individual.
-
Kindness- in PE, this is shown when working as a team and showing sportspersonship in winning and in defeat.
-
Behaviour- in PE, this is shown by following rules set and managing themselves in a positive way.
A child will be able to apply and develop a range of physical skills, which are applied to individual and team contexts. Where tactics have been developed and used to make links to their actions and sequences of movement. A child will be able to enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other and be successful in their individual achievements.
How does our vision for PE link to the whole school vision and purpose?
“We want to encourage the children to be risk takers, be brave in their learning, meet their challenges and not be afraid to try” – through an inclusive approach where exploration, trial and error, enquiry and creativity are encouraged so everyone is suitably challenged and achieves success relevant to their own abilities.
“Our aim is to develop self-discipline and the ability to take responsibility for their own choices and behaviour” – by using a pupil centre teaching approach where the responsibility for their learning and behaviour is developed between teacher and the pupil.
“Focuses on developing skills and knowledge, which meets individual needs, no matter how diverse and which prepares children for their future.” – our PE curriculum will link directly to this by providing a curriculum map that develops physical, cognitive, social and emotional skills and the spine of which is our school values.
“Encourages everyone to show self-respect and encourages everyone to show respect and concern for each other. To appreciate and value the diversity of others.” – developing sportspersonship qualities and collaborating and co-operating through PE and School games competitions.
